Janine graduated from Dartmouth College with degrees in Asian Studies Modified with Film and Media Studies and Asian Languages and Literatures with a concentration in Chinese and Japanese. At Dartmouth, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a Presidential Scholar, a Japanese Language Apprentice Teacher, and a Japanese Culture Learning Fellow. Janine studied Korean language at Seoul National University for a winter and spent six months studying Japanese culture, art, and linguistics at Keio University in Tokyo. She conducted research on pre-1949 Shanghai cinema and worked on a multilingual film term dictionary for two years, later receiving a grant to return to Tokyo to research Japanese animation. Janine enjoys getting to know her students’ interests and guiding students’ process of self-discovery through discussion and introspection. In her free time, Janine likes visiting museums, exploring restaurants, indulging in East Asian cinema and television, and making her own art and animation.
